Veterinary Technician Certification Application Process

Online applications are now available for veterinary technicians category 1, 2, or 3. 
  • Apply online at https://mydatcp.wi.gov, choose Licenses, then Veterinary Examining Board, then the credential that applies to you, and click Start New Application.
  • Complete all information and pay at the end.
  • You will need to mail the signed and notarized signature page to ATTN: VEB at the Madison address. The Veterinary Examining Board (VEB) will email you with more information once your request is received and reviewed.
Note: If you pay by credit card or automated clearing house (ACH), this payment can be applied right away.​
 
If applying by mail, be sure to only use the most recent forms posted on this website.    

Category 1: Applicants who have graduated from an AVMA/CVMA accredited technical school or college and passed both the VTNE and the Wisconsin state exam.

Applicants must first apply for the VTNE and the Wisconsin state exam directly with the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) at AAVSB.org. The VTNE online application, exam fee ($345), and final transcript must be submitted to the AAVSB as part of their application process. They will email you with testing information. By applying for the VTNE through Wisconsin, you will automatically be included to take the state exam online through AAVSB’s testing vendor. They will email you with information to register and pay ($55​) for the state exam.

After you have received a passing score from the VTNE and the Wisconsin state exam:

  • Apply online (see instructions above) or print, complete, and submit our Veterinary Technician Application (be sure to have your signature notarized) and applicable fee to: DATCP-VEB, Lockbox 93598, Milwaukee, WI  53293. Review the first several pages of the application for instructions and directions for any additional forms or information that may be needed.
  • If you are applying by paper you must also print and complete the Social Security Form. For security reasons, mail directly to DATCP, ATTN: VEB/CONFIDENTIAL, P.O. Box 8911, Madison, WI  53708-8911.
  • For both online and paper applications:
    • Your school or college will need to complete the Certificate of Technical School/College, sign, seal, and mail directly to: DATCP-VEB, P.O. Box 8911, Madison, WI 53708-8911,​ or email it to datcpveb@wisconsin.gov.
    • Submit you passing score reports from both exams. If you registered through State of Wisconsin AAVSB will sent these to VEB.

Once all of the above is received and reviewed your certification will be issued and you will be sent an email with information to register for online services to print your credential. 

Category 2: On-the-job training (OJT). 
  • Must first apply for a Wisconsin technician certification to be approved to take the national and state exams through on-the-job-training. 
  • Apply online (see instructions above) or print, complete, and submit the Veterinary Technician Application (be sure to have your signature notarized) and applicable fee to: DATCP-VEB, Lockbox 93598, Milwaukee, WI  53293. Review the first several pages of the application for instructions and directions for any additional forms or information that may be needed.
  • If you are applying by paper you must also print and complete the Social Security Form. For security reasons, mail directly to DATCP, ATTN: VEB/CONFIDENTIAL, P.O. Box 8911, Madison, WI  53708-8911.
  • For both online or paper applications, forward the Affidavit of Licensed Veterinarian to your employer to complete, sign, have notarized, and mailed directly by them to DATCP, ATTN: VEB, P.O. Box 8911, Madison, WI 53708-8911.
  • Candidates applying on the basis of OJT must first submit a completed application package and all applicable fees to the VEB a minimum of 30 days prio​r to the online application deadline for the VTNE they wish to take. This requirement also applies to out-of-state OJT applicants.

Once all of the above is received and reviewed, DATCP will email you with your approval to test or request for any additional information or documentation that may be needed.

Once approved, you are able to take both the VTNE and the Wisconsin state exam. These exams may be taken in any order. To register and pay for each exam, visit AAVSB.org. The VTNE is $34​0 and the state exam is $50.00. Contact the VEB once you have registered, so your status can be approved to schedule your test date. AAVSB or their testing vendor will email you with testing information for both the VTNE and the state exam. AAVSB will provide VEB with all passing score reports.

Once all of the above is received and reviewed, your certification will be issued and you will be sent an email with information to register for our online services to print your credential.
 
Category 3: Certified in another state or have passed the VTNE through another state.
  • Apply online (see instructions above) or print, complete, and submit the Veterinary Technician Application (be sure to have your signature notarized) and applicable fee to: DATCP-VEB, Lockbox 93598, Milwaukee, WI  53293. Review the first several pages of the application for instructions and directions for any additional forms or information that may be needed.
  • If you are applying by paper, print and complete the Social Security Form. For security reasons, mail directly to DATCP, ATTN: VEB/CONFIDENTIAL, P.O. Box 8911, Madison, WI  53708-8911. 
  • For both online or paper applications: 
    • Verification of Licensure from any and all states that you have ever held a veterinary license or certification. Contact the applicable state veterinary board and have verification mailed directly to the Wisconsin VEB at: DATCP-VEB, PO Box 8911, Madison, WI 53708-8911.
    • Your school or college will need to complete our Certificate of Technical School/College, sign, seal and mail directly to us at: DATCP-VEB, PO Box 8911, Madison, WI 53708-8911, or email it to datcpveb@wisconsin.gov.
    • Contact AAVSB.org and request your score report be sent to the Wisconsin VEB. AAVSB has VEB's contact information. 
    • You will receive an email from AAVSB with information to register and pay ($50) to take the state exam online through TesTrac, their testing vendor. They will provide VEB with your score report once completed.
Once all of the above is received and reviewed your certification will then be issued and you will be sent an email with information to register for the online services to print your credential.

Wisconsin Statutes and Rules Exam information

State exams are taken through TesTrac, an online testing vendor from AAVSB.org. You will receive an email from them with information to pay the $50 exam fee and take the Wisconsin state exam. \

The exam is an online open book exam of multiple choice questions relating to the rules and statutes governing the practice of veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin. There are also questions relating to veterinary practice. You have 60 days to complete once you have started. A passing score is 88% or higher. 

Note: Testing windows are twice per month, around the middle and the end of each month. The testing vendor will provide VEB with your score report. You should allow up to 30 days for the state exam process.
