The Wisconsin Depa​rtment of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP)​ Grain Inspection Unit is headquartered in Superior. This office conducts official USDA inspections in accordance with guidelines established by, and under a cooperative agreement with, the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS). FGIS is under the Agricultural Market​ing Service, an agency housed within the United States Department of Agriculture. Services provided include:

  • Grading of wheat, oats, barley, corn, soybeans, and other grain
  • Weighing grain
  • Laboratory testing for falling numbers, mycotoxins, and other factors
  • Stowage exams

Information about Submitting Samples

Each sample must have a unique identification number so that results for each submitted sample can be properly identified. Include contact name, company name (for billing purposes), and an email address for where results should be sent.  Results are typically pro​vided within 24 hours.

Minimum sample sizes​​

  • ​Full grade/inspection: 1,000 to 1,250 grams
  • Protein test: 600g
  • Falling Number determination: approximately 250g
  • DON or vomitoxin test: approximately 200g
  • Aflatoxin test: approximately 10 pounds
