Swine Movement for Licensed Markets - Non-Federally-Approved Market (Slaughter)

Movement Rules: Swine Imported to a Non-Federally Approved Market Where All Swine on Market Premises the Day of the Sale are Shipped Directly to Slaughter

Testing for Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv), is not required for swine to go to the market for slaughter sales (where all swine on the premises the day of the sale move from the market directly to slaughter).

  • To avoid the need for testing, these animals must arrive at the market when there are no other swine at the market other than swine going to slaughter, and leave the market prior to the arrival of any other non-slaughter destined swine.
  • Imported slaughter swine from herds that have tested negative within 90 days prior to import may arrive at the market prior to the slaughter sale day if they meet regular import requirements for movement to non-slaughter sales.
  • Other swine that may arrive at the market for other sale days may not arrive at the market until all slaughter swine have left the premises.

Commercial swine entering Wisconsin to a non-federally approved market and then going directly to slaughter must have the following:
  • Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) with the following information: 
    • Complete physical origin address 
    • Complete physical destination address 
    • Inspection date within 30 days of import
    • Official identification (one of the following):
      • USDA ear tag number – number must begin with a state 2-digit code followed by 2 or 3 letters and 4 numbers
      • USDA “840” ear tag number
      • Ear notch (if the pig is a purebred and the ear notch is registered)
      • A tattoo or an ear tag with the premises identification number and a unique identifier (a tag without the premises ID number is not sufficient)
      • A microchip for swine kept as pets
      • Breed association tattoo
      • Feeder swine:
        • If the animals are 80 pounds or less, individual ID is not required but the premises identification number or state-issued code of the premises of origin must be on the animals (ear tag or tattoo)
        • If the animals are more than 80 pounds, each animal must have an official individual ID as noted above
    • Statement on the CVI that there are no clinical signs of PRRS and PEDv at the time of inspection
    • Not required but requested for clarity: Statement on the CVI that the swine are going to a market for sale direct to slaughter and that all swine on the market premises the day of the sale are going to slaughter
    • Veterinarian’s signature

Markets are required to collect and keep copies of CVIs and turn away producers who do not have complete CVIs.
