Black Cutworm Trap Network Summary 2025
The early-season arrival of black cutworm moths into Wisconsin was monitored by DATCP again in spring 2025, as it has been for the last quarter of a century. Ahead of the migration, a network of 42 volunteer cooperators set 96 pheromone traps in 36 counties to track arrival dates, estimate regional moth abundance, and determine the timing of significant or intense flights.
The first Wisconsin moth catch of 2025 was registered April 2 and initial intense captures (defined as nine or more moths trapped in two nights) were recorded by the Black Cutworm Trap Network April 16. The primary black cutworm damage window for seedling corn opened May 19
across far southern Wisconsin, May 23 at Hancock, and May 31 near Wausau.
A total of 4,588 moths were captured in 96 traps during the 10-week trapping program, for an average 48 moths per trap. Despite
a
moderate risk of localized black cutworm infestations based on the timing of moth arrivals relative to the start of corn planting, favorable field conditions,
and locally heavy moth counts, Wisconsin's risk factors for black cutworm infestation did not fully align and extensive cutworm damage to seedling corn was not reported or observed in 2025. A dashboard summarizing cumulative trap counts and peak catch data is provided below.
