Wisconsin's production agriculture, a dynamic and ever-expanding industry, is requiring more and more electric energy to stay competitive. This expansion places a huge demand on antiquated electric equipment and wiring. The wiring on a substantial number of farms was installed 20+ years ago and in some cases has been subject to alteration by people who were not necessarily qualified electricians. Correct farm wiring is essential for energy efficiency, minimizing stray voltage and safety.
Farm Rewiring Certification Classes
Farm rewiring certification classes are offered at various locations throughout the state by the following entities: Alliant Energy, Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, and XCel Energy. To qualify to do farm wiring under a utility-sponsored cost share program, certified electricians must attend and successfully complete the Farmstead Rewire Course developed by the Wisconsin Technical College System with the cooperation of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, the Electric Cooperatives and the Public Electric Utilities. Attendees must also complete a farm rewire refresher class every three years.
Electric Utilities and Electric Cooperatives
Electric utilities and electric cooperatives are offering cost-sharing programs to reduce farmers' out-of-pocket costs for rewiring of their farms. ALL of the programs require the work be inspected and done by a certified electrician.

Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services
Staff provides electrical consultation to owners, builders, inspectors, electricians, and designers. Electrical inspections are made upon special request and required by many of the Wisconsin rewiring cost-share programs. Training of electrical professionals is offered.
