The Expanding Farm to School Learning in Sheboygan County project increases food literacy for 600 additional students in three public school districts: Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan, and Plymouth. Grant funds will grow capacity at Nourish Farms, Inc. to host additional field trips and deliver lessons to 22 more classes; increase equitable access to field trips and programs for three area low-income schools; repair garden infrastructure at partner schools; and deepen school stakeholder engagement.
Nourish Farms advertised the opportunity to help with hoop house construction by reaching out to local schools and companies, specifically targeting tech and agricultural classes due to the specialized nature of the task. The hoop house will support our 36-month harvest rotation by allowing an extended growing season and an introduction of new crop varieties, including spring root crops, summer vegetables, and fall greens. Nourish is planning for perennial production in raised beds. Field trips are in the works with schools. Scheduling depends on class sizes and will likely take place in late fall 2024 or early spring 2025. Educational programming continues to evolve with facility growth, and to align with classroom needs. Successful planning, enthusiastic school partners, and timely material deliveries position the project well for future success.
