The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has imposed an exterior quarantine on items that could carry Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, or mountain pine beetle. An exterior quarantine restricts imports of some pine products from areas infested with MPB.
Areas Covered by the Quarantine
The quarantine applies to infested areas of the United States or Canada. Currently, infested areas are Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
Items Covered by the Quarantine
Firewood of any species, wood or plant parts of the genus Pinus (pines), including dimensional lumber with bark attached, logs, stumps and branches.
Exceptions That Are Allowed to Enter Wisconsin Under the Quarantine
- Kiln-dried or bark-free lumber
- Finished wood products
- Christmas trees
- Nursery stock
- Pine bark mulch
- Pulpwood chips
- Pine materials that have been inspected or treated to prevent the spread of mountain pine beetle
