These requirements apply to any ruminant that is not indigenous to Wisconsin and that is not a bovine or cervid. This classification includes, but is not limited to, yaks, water buffalo, nondomestic sheep and goats, pronghorn antelope, giraffes, and Old World camels. Exotic ruminants entering Wisconsin need the following:
- Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI)
- Import permit
- Proof they meet testing requirements
- Tuberculosis: Negative TB test required within 60 days before entry. Please call (608) 224-4872 beforehand to determine which TB test to use. Requirement waived if you are moving the animal directly to an institution that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
- Brucellosis: Negative brucellosis test required within 30 days before entry. Requirement waived if you are moving the animal directly to an institution that is accredited by the AZA or if the animal has been gelded.
- Although official identification is not specifically required for import, official identification is required for tuberculosis and brucellosis testing and should be included on the CVI.
