Organic Veterinary Training Sessions Scheduled

MADISON – Veterinarians interested in learning more about organic livestock practices and regulations are invited to attend an Organic Veterinary Training Session co-hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and Organic Valley. Two training sessions will be offered – one in Eau Claire and one in Madison – and class content will be the same at both locations.

"With the growth of organic agriculture in Wisconsin, more and more veterinarians are being called to organic farms," said Angie Sullivan, organics and grazing specialist with DATCP's Division of Agricultural Development. "DATCP staff, as well as the Wisconsin Organic Advisory Council, have been approached by agricultural professionals saying there is a need for this type of training."   

The sessions will be taught by veterinarians Guy Jodarski and Hubert Karreman. 

Dr. Jodarski, based in Neillsville, serves as lead veterinarian for CROPP Cooperative/Organic Valley. He works in organic and sustainable livestock practice with an emphasis in dairy cattle herd health. In practice for 29 years, Jodarski enjoys teaching how to keep cattle, swine and poultry healthy without the use of antibiotics, synthetic hormones and chemicals. He serves on the Public Health and Food Safety Committee of the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA).

Dr. Karreman is an organic dairy veterinarian and a leading voice in organic veterinary medicine. Working with real cases in clinical practice for 20 years under the strict "no antibiotics" rule for organic livestock, he pioneered non-antibiotic treatments for infectious disease. He was in full-time clinical and emergency practice in Lancaster, PA. for two decades, and now focuses on teaching and sharing the methods he successfully utilized as an in-the-trenches clinician. He manages a forage-based dairy and diversified farm with his wife, Suzanne, and is the author of several books about organic cow care.

Space is limited to 50 participants in each class. Nine CEU credits will be awarded to participants who complete the full-day session, with certificates provided at the end of the training.  The $25.00 registration fee includes lunch. Register online: https://uwccs.eventsair.com/ovt/reg
