Growing Tree 4.jpegThe Farm to ECE: Racine County Edible Gardens project is increasing the capacity to procure, prepare, and serve local foods in 10 regulated underserved childcare programs in Racine County. This is being achieved through installing edible gardens, providing technical assistance, and improving local foods infrastructure. Agricultural education and resources are also being made available to all regulated childcare programs in Racine County.

Through an application process that prioritized equity and need, four early childhood education (ECE) sites were selected for gardening infrastructure installation. Three local businesses — CCW Studios, Lorenz Topsoil, and Iron Mountain Property — partnered to complete garden installation. Plants were delivered at the beginning of May 2024. The Wisconsin Early Childhood Association Inc. (WECA) kicked off the summer with two professional development opportunities offered through the Wisconsin-based, four-part gardening curriculum Roots in the Ground. In-person technical assistance was provided to all participating ECEs in July 2024. WECA looks forward to offering the second half of the Roots in the Ground curriculum, as well as planning culturally relevant cooking classes and opportunities for programs to connect with local food growers and distributors.
