The Northern Waters Environmental School (NWES): Digging into Local Food Systems project in Hayward instructs students through field (on-farm) and lab (school). Students learn about ecosystem nutrient cycling and the critical importance of living soil to produce nutrient dense food. Pastured-raised meats from farms participating in soil analysis are procured and served to students.
Northern Waters Environmental School (NWES) Farm to School leads are connecting with local farmers to collaborate on fall activities and continue to hone their project goals.
It has been a challenge to find staff and student time to contribute to the project over the summer months, but the project addressed the issue by offering summer 'work' days for students to continue planning for the Digging into Soils project. In fall 2024, NWES will offer farmer site visits, soil analysis activities, and have more available staff time to invest in the project.
