Potato Survey Reports

The pest survey team conducts statewide surveys for disease and nematode problems that are of special concern for potato production and trade. Our fruit and vegetable inspectors in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program and Wisconsin potato growers have collected thousands of potato and soil samples from fields for testing at DATCP's plant industry laboratory.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is looking for growers to participate in a  potato mop top virus (PMTV) and powdery scab survey.

In 2020, PMTV was detected for the first time in a Wisconsin grown potato tuber, by University of Wisconsin-Madison plant pathologists. The last time DATCP did a survey of the state for PMTV and its vector Spongospora subterranea f. sp. subterranea (powdery scab) was in 2009 and 2010. A 2021/2022 survey of the state for these two pathogens will update our knowledge of the distribution of these two pathogens, understand the scope of disease presence, and locate risk areas in Wisconsin.

Survey Outline

  • The survey will cover two growing seasons – 2021 and 2022.
  • DATCP’s goal is to test 200 fields both years of the survey.
  • From December of 2021 to January 2022, DATCP staff will collect stored tubers for testing.
  • In the fall of 2022, DATCP staff will collect soil samples from harvested fields for testing.
  • The tubers and soil will be tested using PCR for the presence of potato mop top virus and powdery scab.

Support Needed in 2022 from Participating Growers

In 2022, growers will need to provide GPS coordinates of fields they would like to have sampled and access to those fields. DATCP staff will sample fields after the 2022 harvest.

Field location information will be kept anonymous and only reported at the county level.

Survey Reporting

Growers will have access to updated maps showing where PMTV and powdery scab occur in the state and final reports each year of the survey. In addition, participating growers will receive individual results for their tested fields immediately after testing.
