The WI Farm to School Advisory Council was established by Act 293 and it members serve as ambassadors for farm to school efforts across the state; help the Farm to School Leadership Group and Steering Committee prioritize statewide farm to school goals and programming; and advise future state-level policy and strategy related to farm to school.
Current members are: Dan Smith, Division Administrator, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection; Charles Warzecha, Deputy Administrator, Division of Public Health, Wisconsin Department of Health; Jessica Sharkus, Director, School Nutrition Team, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction; John Dettman, Director of Performance, UW-Madison Athletics; Kymm Mutch, Principal, Mutch Better Foods LLC; Cathy Statz, Education Director, Wisconsin Farmers Union; Barb Waara, McFarland School District/President, School Nutrition Association; Jim Degan, Manager of School Nutrition, Janesville School District; Nancy Dorman, Director of Policy Services, Wisconsin School Board Association; Nan Peterson, Director for Child Health Advocacy, American Family Children's Hospital; Daithi Wolfe, Early Education Policy Analyst, Wisconsin Council on Children and Families; Chris Blakeney, Producer, Amazing Grace Family Farms; Cynthia Holt; Amy Meinen, Director of Support Staff, healthTIDE; and Amber Canto, State Coordinator of FoodWise, UW-Extension.
Wisconsin Farm to School Leadership Group
The Wisconsin Farm to School Leadership Group is comprised of community, county, and state leaders from across Wisconsin who are actively engaged in growing farm to school efforts around the state. The group meets monthly via teleconference, with two in-person meetings per year.
Wisconsin Farm to School Steering Committee
Farm to school is made possible through strong inter-agency partnerships. The WI Farm to School Steering Committee is comprised of employees from the WI Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection; the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems; the WI Department of Public Instruction; and the Wisconsin School Garden Initiative at Community Groundworks.
Act 293 establishes farm to school to mean a program to connect schools with nearby farms to provide with locally produced fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and other nutritious, locally produced foods in school breakfasts, lunches, and snacks; help children develop healthy eating habits; provide nutritional and agricultural education; and improve farmers' incomes and direct access to markets.
