Fraudulent USDA Faxes Seek Personal Info (PDF)
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), fraudulent letters that claim to be from the USDA have been sent by fax to individuals and businesses in Wisconsin.
These false letters bear the USDA logo and seal and are signed by an individual identified as “Frank Rutenberg” using a title of “Senior Procurement Officer.” The letters seek personal information from recipients – under no circumstance should recipients respond with personal and financial information!
USDA officials learned about the letters on March 16th. Letters have been received in Alabama, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, but may have also been sent to other states. USDA is investigating this matter through the Office of the Inspector General.
Again, recipients should not respond to the letters and should not supply the requested information.
If you suspect you have received such a letter or have questions, contact the USDA at: procurement.policy@dm.usda.gov or call 202-720-9448.
