Firewood Dealer Certification

Under a voluntary program, a firewood dealer can be certified so their wood, grown and cut in Wisconsin, can be used in State Parks and state-managed lands throughout Wisconsin.

This certification is not required to sell firewood in Wisconsin.

Certification Process

There are two steps to becoming certified:

• Complete and submit a certification application

• Inspection by DATCP to verify the information presented on the application form.

The certification is valid for one year.

Certification Application

The application requires the following information:

• Legal name of firewood dealer and any trade names used within Wisconsin
• Address of the business and addresses of other business locations that sells or distributes firewood in the state
• Approximate annual volume of firewood sold or distributed in Wisconsin
• Sources of firewood
• Firewood treatment methods

Firewood Treatment Methods

To prevent the spread of invasive pests, certified firewood dealers must use one or more approved treatment methods including:

• Heat treatment to an internal temperature of at least 140° F (60° C.) at maintained at the temperature for at least 60 minutes.
• All bark and additional wood to a depth of at least ½ inch beneath the bark, is removed from each piece of firewood.
• The firewood is stored on the dealer’s premises for at least two years before it is sold or distributed in Wisconsin.
• The firewood is treated in a manner approved, in writing, by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, to kill all pests that may inhabit the firewood.
