DATCP to Perform Inspections at the Port of Duluth

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is pleased to announce an agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in which DATCP will perform USDA-certified grain inspection services in the Port of Duluth, Minnesota.
“We thank the USDA for agreeing to an innovative strategy that makes the best use of all existing resources and benefits our agencies and the grain industry,” said DATCP Secretary Ben Brancel. “We are looking forward to working with Duluth shippers and elevators, and DATCP will provide the Duluth grain industry with the same high level of service it now provides in Superior.”
Federal law requires that grain destined for export must receive official grading and weighing, thus ensuring consistent quality and world market demand for American grain.
DATCP operates the Superior grain inspection program under authority delegated by the USDA-Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) and will now do the same at the Port of Duluth. FGIS licenses all DATCP grain inspectors and establishes the protocols that DATCP follows for grain sampling, testing and grading.
