Why protect endangered and threatened species? Endangered and threatened species are parts of larger natural communities of common, uncommon, and rare species. Groups of species with similar requirements live in similar habitats. Without appropriate habitat and space to multiply in, endangered and threatened species cannot sustain themselves. The afore-mentioned natural communities with their interdependent species provide for us all the services required to do business and conduct our daily lives. We depend on natural communities to provide us clean air and water; fertile, stable soils; natural settings for recreation and mental health; potential drugs, pesticides, other health products; new crops and farm animals and other commercial products.
