Wisconsin Working Lands Initiative

The Wisconsin Working Lands Initiative was signed into law in 2009 and is comprised of the following three programs:

  • Farmland Preservation Program
  • Agricultural Enterprise Area Program
  • Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easement Program

The 2011 WI Act 32, the Biennial Budget Bill, eliminated the collection of a Conversion Fee when land is rezoned out of a certified farmland preservation zoning district. A copy of 2011 WI Act 32, can be found at the following link:

    The Working Lands Initiative was developed with the assistance of the Working Lands Steering Committee.

    Under Wisconsin Act 28, DATCP, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, must report to the Board of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and the Department of Administration on farmland preservation by Dec. 31, 2011 and biennially thereafter.
