Motor Vehicle Sales
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) licenses motor vehicle manufactures, dealers and sales personnel (see Wisconsin Statutes chapter 218.) DOT regulates the advertising, sales and warranty practices of license holders. DOT may deny, suspend or revoke a license for cause, including unfair or deceptive business practices. DOT rules address the following topics, among others:
- Dealer bonding and financial security.
- Motor vehicle advertising and sales claims. A seller may not make any untrue, deceptive or misleading claim.
- Disclosure of motor vehicle condition (new and used vehicles).
- Sales contracts.
- Price changes.
- Odometer disclosures.
