Local Housing Codes

Many Wisconsin municipalities have adopted housing codes. Housing codes establish maintenance standards for housing, including rental housing. Housing codes differ from building codes, which apply to new construction. Municipalities may inspect for compliance with housing codes. Housing code inspections are aimed at maintaining the housing stock over the long run, and are not necessarily aimed at resolving individual tenant grievances.

Some municipalities have also adopted ordinances regulating landlord-tenant relations. Check regulations in your municipality.
