Consumer Law at Your Fingertips
Food Safety & Labeling
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection licenses and inspects food warehouses (see Wisconsin Statutes section 97.27). Food warehouses must comply with food safety standards (see Wisconsin Administrative Code chapter ATCP 71). These include standards for:
- Warehouse facilities.
- Personnel sanitation.
- Food storage and handling.
- Inventory records.
DATCP may suspend food warehouse licenses, and may issue holding orders to stop sales of adulterated or misbranded food. DATCP may also initiate civil or criminal enforcement actions in court. See Wisconsin Statutes section 93.06 and chapter 97.
