Fair Packaging & Labeling

Consumer Commodities

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) regulates unfair and deceptive business practices. DATCP rules require fair packaging and labeling of consumer commodities, including food, drugs, cosmetics and other items used for consumption, personal care or household tasks. These rules are based on federal rules. The rules spell out labeling requirements related to:

  • Product identity.
  • Manufacturer’s identity.
  • Product contents (net quantity).
  • Nutrition labeling of packaged food.

Rule violators may be prosecuted, and there is a private remedy for consumers. For more information, see Consumer Commodities details.
