IMPORTING EXOTIC SPECIES FROM OUTSIDE WISCONSIN
Most of the species covered on this page require the following:
- Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI)
- Import permit
o If the animals are part of a rodeo, circus, or menagerie and will be in Wisconsin for a limited time, use this permit application form
o If the animals are privately owned and relocating to Wisconsin, use the general import permit application form
o If you are not sure which form to use, or you have other questions, call 608-224-4874 weekdays between 7:45 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Central Time
· Proof that they meet any required testing requirements (see below)

How to Determine if it’s Legal to Own a Particular Species
Exotic Ruminants
These requirements apply to any ruminant that is not indigenous to Wisconsin and that is not a bovine or cervid. This classification includes, but is not limited to, yaks, water buffalo, pronghorn antelope, giraffes, vicuñas and Old World camels (go here for the import requirements for alpacas, llamas and guanacos). Exotic ruminants entering Wisconsin need the following:
- Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI)
- Import permit
- Proof they meet testing requirements
o Tuberculosis – negative TB test required within 60 days before entry. Requirement waived if you are moving the animal directly to an institution that is accredited by the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums.
o Brucellosis – negative brucellosis test required within 30 days before entry. Requirement waived if you are moving the animal directly to an institution that is accredited by the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums.
o Vesicular stomatitis (VS) – there are special requirements if this rare disease has been diagnosed in your state.

Elephants
All of the following are required:
- Current certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI)
- Tuberculosis testing in compliance with the USDA Guidelines for the Control of Tuberculosis in Elephants 2010 requirements – the test dates and results must be included on the CVI. Copies of all trunk washes and serum tests from the previous 12 months must be provided with the import permit application as well as a signed statement from the animal owner regarding any exposure of elephants to elephants known to be infected with tuberculosis (culture positive)

- Specific statements (unless the animals are coming from a region with vesicular stomatitis)
Zebras and Other Exotic Equines
All of the following are required:
- Current certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI)
- Negative equine infectious anemia (EIA) test since January 1 of this year
- Import permit
Not required:
- Other tests
- Vaccinations
- Specific statements (unless the animals are coming from a region with vesicular stomatitis)

Prohibited animals
These animals may not be brought into Wisconsin:
Any of the following Africa-origin rodent species:
- Tree squirrels
- Rope squirrels
- Dormice
- Gambian giant pouched rats
- Brush-tailed porcupine
- Striped mice
Please note: Aside from the prohibited species listed above, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection does not determine if it is legal to own a particular exotic animal species. DATCP strongly encourages you to contact officials at all levels of the local government in the destination jurisdiction (county, township, and municipality) to determine their regulations on animal ownership.
