Cattle & Bison: Minnesota

This information is current as of February 10, 2012

Effective October 4, 2011, Wisconsin recognizes Minnesota's TB-Free Status. TB testing is no longer required.

General import rules:

  • The rules for American Bison imports are identical to the rules for bovine beef breeds.
  • When official ID is required, there is no age exemption - all animals regardless of age must have official identification.
  • The official ID must be on the certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI), not on attached paperwork.
  • If you wish to import animals from several different states, or if the animals have been in this state for less than 120 days, please call the import coordinator at (608) 224-4874.
  • The results of official tests must be current and complete - not out-of-date or "pending."
  • No M-branded bovines/cattle from Mexico may be imported to Wisconsin except directly to a slaughter facility.
  • For bovines that are part of a rodeo, circus, or menagerie, please visit the Circuses, Rodeos, and Menageries page.
  • For animals that are an exotic species, please visit the Exotic Ruminants page.
  • Out-of-state organizers and Wisconsin participants of consignment sales that may include animals from Michigan should call the import coordinator at (608) 224-4874 to discuss tuberculosis testing and import requirements.

Breeding cattle OR Animals attending fairs/exhibitions:

  • Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) with complete physical destination address required.
  • Sexually intact animals of any age, including calves at side, must have at least one form of official identification. The following are official ID: USDA metal ear tag number (starts with state 2-digit code); USDA "840" button tag number; Bangs tag number; breed association tattoo number; breed association registration number; or USDA-approved RFID number.
  • No TB tests required.
  • No other tests or statements required.
  • No import permit required.
  • If there is a current vesicular stomatitis diagnosis or active quarantine in this state, call (608) 224-4874.
  • Animals attending fairs or exhibitions may need to meet additional requirements. Contact the show organizers for more information.
  • Instructions for Wisconsin animals attending exhibitions and sales in Minnesota:  Animals must meet the import requirements of the sale or show and the state of Minnesota.  There are no additional requirements for the animals to return to Wisconsin.  The previous requirements for quarantine and additional testing are no longer in effect.

Feeder cattle:

  • Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) with complete physical destination address required.
  • All feeder cattle of any age, excluding steers, must have official identification (see section above).
  • No TB tests required.

Veal calves:

  • Certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) with complete physical destination address required.
  • Veal calves under 120 days do not need official ID but must be identified as veal calves on the CVI.
  • No TB tests required.
  • No import permit required.

Slaughter cattle:

Cattle going directly to slaughter are not required to have official individual ID or a CVI but must have paperwork, such as a bill of lading or bill of sale, that includes all of the following:
  • Origin of the animals
  • Destination of the animals (not the address of the consignee)
  • Total number of animals
However, animals that are designated as slaughter animals but are not being sent directly to a slaughter facility must meet import requirements above.
