MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will host a series of open house meetings next month to present this year’s plan to spray for gypsy moth.

“The gypsy moth is a serious invasive pest that threatens our forests and urban trees, and it can have a negative impact on Wisconsin’s timber, paper, nursery and tourism industries,” said Randy Sthokal, the Gypsy Moth Slow the Spread Program Coordinator.

DATCP plans to spray over selected areas in western Wisconsin using low-flying planes, totaling approximately 163,000 acres in 24 counties, including about 9,300 acres in the city of Superior. These areas have been identified as having elevated or reproducing populations of gypsy moth, a destructive insect with an appetite for about 500 different species of trees and shrubs.

The counties scheduled to receive aerial spraying are Barron, Bayfield, Chippewa, Clark, Crawford, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jackson, La Crosse, Lafayette, Monroe, Polk, Richland, Rock, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau, Vernon and Washburn.

Gypsy moth program staff will present information on the plan. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with the staff, learn more about gypsy moth and view maps of spray areas.

The open house schedule is as follows:

Madison: Tuesday, March 12, at DATCP, 2811 Agriculture Drive, Room 231, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Black River Falls: Wednesday, March 13, at City Hall, 101 S. Second St., Council Room, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Superior: Thursday, March 14, at the Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave., Classroom, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
