Consumer Protection

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is the state’s primary consumer protection agency. The Bureau of Consumer Protection has broad authority to regulate unfair business practices.

What We Do

  • Operate Wisconsin’s Consumer Information Hotline; consumers can contact our hotline staff by e-mail at or through our toll-free hotline at 1-800-422-7128.
  • Handle about 150,000 new consumer complaints and inquiries each year.
  • Provide consumers and businesses with the information they need. DATCP distributes consumer protection publications and provides information such as “Consumer Protection Law at Your Fingertips” through the website.
  • Regulate unfair and deceptive business practices by rule. DATCP rules protect millions of Wisconsin consumers every day. They also protect honest businesses against unfair competition. Rules have the force of law.
  • Return $5-10 million to consumers each year, and works with the Department of Justice and district attorneys to prosecute serious law violators.
  • Wisconsin's Bureau of Consumer Protection works to enforce the Do Not Call law, protecting Wisconsin residents from unwanted sales calls and texts.
  • Work to prevent identity theft and educate consumers on best practices to safe guard personally identifiable information.
  • Work to ensure fair competition.
  • Standardize commercial weights and measures, and fights weights and measures fraud.
  • Regulate hazardous consumer products.
  • Enforce environmental regulations related to consumer products.
The Bureau of Consumer Protection is located on the first floor of the Wisconsin Agriculture Building located at 2811 Agriculture Drive on Madison’s southeast side. Our hotline and business hours are Monday – Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.
